Kozhikode district is
situated on the south west coastal strip of India. Basking
in the idyllic locale
of the tranquil Arabian Sea on the west and the proud peaks
of the Wayanad hills on the east, this district with its exotic
beaches, lush green countryside, historic sites, all fuse
together to make Kozhikode a charismatic tourist destination
that attracts tourists in droves. Kozhikode is encircled by
Kannur district on the north, on the east by Wayanad district,
on the south by Malappuram district and on the west by the
Arabian Sea.
There is an abundance of wild and marine life here though
wild elephants and bison are occasionally seen in the forests.
Tigers and leopards are very few and rare. Barking deer, Mouse
deer, Monta lizards, Malabar squirrels, black and gray monkeys,
hares and porcupines are found in the forests here.
Kozhikode has made significant contributions in the spheres
of education, agriculture, spice trade, fishing, ship building,
sea trade, media, heritage edifices, cultural arts and festivals,
tourism. In addition, personalities like V. K. Krishna Menon,
P.T. Usha have brought recognition to this well-known district
of Kerala. Kozhikode has an airport at Karipur. Kozhikode
is served by a handful of costal expresses and several passenger
trains.
A well-built network of roads connects Kozhikode to
the other parts of the state. Kappad Beach, Dolphin’s
point, Pazhassirajah Museum, Art Gallery are some of the main
tourist attractions in Kozhikode.
