Kannur’s days of
glory were under the Kolathiri rajas, and its importance as
a spice- trading
port was mentioned by the Venetian traveller Marco Polo. From
the 15th century, various colonial powers, including the Portuguese,
Dutch and British, exerted their influence. But these days
Kannur is a pleasant, unexciting coastal town, but there are
some decent beaches around and it’s the best place to
come. Kannur is also famous for its theyyam dance.
