A land-locked district, Idukki
is a majestic canopy of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests.
Situated at an altitude of 450-748 mt above sea level, this
sanctuary occupies the forestland between Cheruthoni and Periyar
Rivers. Spreading over 77 sq. km, the Idduki Wildlife Sanctuary
extends over the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of Idukki
district. The Idukki Reservoir wrought by three dams - Cheruthoni,
Idukki and Kulamavu - spreads to 33 sq km.
An attractive lake embraces the sanctuary along its three
sides, thus offering opportunities for adventurous boat-rides
and a panoramic view to the tourists. A wide variety of wild
animals like elephants, bisons, bear, wild boars, sambar wild
dogs, jungle cats, tiger, etc populate the sanctuary. Various
species of snakes including cobra, viper, kraits, numerous
non-poisonous ones and birds like jungle fowl, myna, black
bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker, kingfisher etc. can be find in
this sanctuary. Other residents are here..

Snakes: Cobra, viper, krait and a number of non poisonous
snakes.
c) Birds: Jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush,
black bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker, kingfisher etc.
