Nestled in the Palakkad district
of Kerala, around 90 Sq.Kms in all, the Silent Valley in Kerala
is deemed as India's last pristine virgin tract of tropical
evergreen rain forests. It is also a rich preserver of biodiversity.
During the 1970's, construction of a dam across the Kunti
River, which flows out of Silent Valley National Park, threatened
the Silent Valley. Fortunately, a protest by the environmentalists
and conservationists in Kerala brought rescue. Consequently,
this valuable reserve achieved recognition both nationally
and internationally. Presently, it is part of a larger Nilgiri
Biosphere reserve sheltering more than 100 species of butterflies
and birds, the Nilgiri Tahr, the rare and endangered Lion
Tailed Macaque, leopards, tigers and elephants
