Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary
forms a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve, contiguous
with Madumalai
sanctuary in Tamilnadu and Bandipur Sanctuary in Karnataka.
It covers an area of approximately 500 sq. kms. Also identified
as Muthanga, it is about 18 kms from the district headquarters
at Sultan Bathery (Sultan’s Battery). Grasslands
and bamboo are plentiful in these forests accompanied by the
moist deciduous forests. It serves as domicile to large herds
of deer, elephants, gaur and many genres of monkeys and elusive
animals, such as the Slender Loris.
