The festival of Vishu marks the beginning of the New Year according to the Malayalee calendar system. It is celebrated on the first day of Medam. On the occasion of Vishu, the Malayalee people believe that the fortunes for the year depend upon the nature of the object one sees first in the morning of Vishu Day. So they begin their day by looking at the 'Kani' (an auspicious object that is considered to be a good omen). After that the elder members of the family give handsel to the junior family members. This usually consists of silver coins raw rice and Konna flower.
Later, the people smear their foreheads with ashes and sandal paste and go to the temple for worship after bath. In the afternoon, everybody sits down for a elegant feast.
