Guruvayoor Temple
Located in the Thrissur district, Guruvayoor is one of the most sacred pilgrimage centres in Kerala. Guruvayur is also called the
Bhoolokavaikunta - The Heaven on Earth!
The Guruvayoor Temple houses Lord Krishna as its main deity. You will be pleased to discover that the Guruvayoor temple hosts the maximum number of marriages and ‘annaprasanam’(the first rice-feeding of an infant). The traditional Kerala culture believes these two ceremonies as the most important occasions in an individual's life.
The Guruvayoor temple also owes its recognition to the historic non-violent struggle for temple entry rights to the common man. Artistic mural paintings and carvings adorn the walls of the temple giving you a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of the past.
No definite documentation exists as to when the Guruvayoor temple was established. According to legends, the 'Guru' i.e. the deity who is the preceptor of all Gods established this sacred Krishna temple.
As you explore the Chuttambalam, Deepastambham, Sreekovil and other parts of the Guruvayoor temple, you can appreciate the exceptional temple architectural elegance of Kerala. The beautifully sculptured images of Sri Ayyappa, Ganapathy and Edathedathy Kavil Bhagavathy are indeed marvelous. The 7-meter high lamp pillar is definitely a sight to capture.
On your tour through the temple, you will also see elephants in the temple premises. Interestingly, more than 50 elephants stay at the stables of the Guruvayoor temple in Kerala, South India.
